We believe in supporting our youth, as we stand the chance of a more prosperous society”

The “largest generation of young people the world has ever known” are not empowered to serve as leaders and teachers. Considering the local South African context, according the National Development Plan (NDP) we face high numbers of youth unemployment and as well as poor quality of education and unequal opportunities for children. As the Alternative Prosperity Foundation, we support youth leaders under the gold Youth Development Agency. gold-youth uses the methodology of peer education, which harnesses the influence that young people have on their peers. Youth encourage each other to make informed choices and develop health-enhancing and purpose-driven social norms. gold-youth‘s audacious goal is to develop 10 million young African leaders with character and integrity to mobilise their generation with the knowledge, tools and support to reach their full potential, with concrete results in social behaviour change, education & job creation. gold-youth offers their graduates (called gold Grads) opportunities in further education, workplace internships, entry-level jobs and entrepreneurship ventures.

What has been done

From 2017 to 2021 we funded the gold-youth peer education programme that reaches 3 598 peers, through 1 165 peer educators and 42 facilitator interns in 21 of South Africa’s most vulnerable schools. In 2018 we successfully piloted the Diversity Living and Leadership intervention reaching 33 gold Grads and facilitator interns. This has been followed by the successful implementation of annual Diversity Living and Leadership interventions.
